China Mobile Starts Wifi Service Support
Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008China Mobile has re-launched its tuned 88-series service packages recently, all of the sub 5 packages under which has newly added a 10hr-Wifi-service(Source:sina(chinese)). It also says the WLAN service is now only availabe in Beijing and Shanghai.
I never get the chance to try it out, but certainly it’s a good sign for the iPhone officially coming into China, WITHOUT the wifi-cut. Personally I wouldn’t buy the phone if there’s no wifi support.
Let’s wait and see what will happen next.
P.S. I’ll update if I could try the CMCC wifi service later.
Update(Dec.30,2008): China Mobile has expanded its WiFi service, from GoTone only, to M-zone ,Easyyown and GoTone now, as Sina reports today. Really, it’s kinda sign that China may remove the restriction of no Wifi module in the mobile device.
Update(Dec.31,2008): GoTone only,again.
My Frequently Visited Websites On the iPhone
Sunday, December 21st, 20081.iphone.xianguo.com and Google Reader – for news and my interested stuff.
one or more hours per day.
both optimized for the iphone, so much better viewing experience.
Furthermore, lower cost ‘coz at that time I’m using GPRS/EDGE to access the internet.
2.iphone.youku.com, iphone.6.cn – for video watching.
video buffering speed is acceptable(Sure only when Wifi is available).
3.Baidu Zhidao – knowledge query, mostly on the way where GPRS/EDGE is the only way to get to the internet.
Besides, most of the zhidao webpages are mainly in text, which, again, cost me less and show me the whole page in a relatively shorter time.
4. Google Search – general use.
Wiki2Touch On iPhone 2.1
Saturday, October 11th, 2008Wiki2Touch(google code page here) has always been one of my favorite apps since day 1 when I get it. The feeling is great, you know, when you have no idea of something, you always can ask Wiki2Touch for the answer. Most of time, you will be satisfied. Besides, at that moment, you don have to be online. Terribly awesome, eh?
If you are a fan of Wiki2Touch and you now have the firmware 2.0 or 2.1, and you haven’t figure out how to get Wiki2Touch working on the iphone, I have a good news for you
I googled a lot and finally find this post. It works.
The how-to is easy. But before that, make sure you already have this:
1. A jailbroke iphone on firmware 2.x(including 2.1) with OpenSSH successfully loaded.
2. The wikipedia data file(.bin) in your preferred language version.
Now download this wikipedia-auf-fw-201 to your computer, unzip it and then copy them to the phone by WinSCP(read my previous post here for more info) or your preferred client.
Then give 0755 permission to the server daemon \private\var\mobile\Media\Wikipedia\daemon\wikisrvd. Run daemon/wikisrvd -v -l zh & via Putty.
Open Safari and go to http://127.0.0.1:8080/index.html. And you are now supposed to see the familar homepage of Wiki2Touch.
Add this link to your bookmark and you are done. Anytime when you wanna find out something, use this bookmark in Safari.
I haven’t uploaded the image.bin to the phone, so not sure if the image functions well or not. Besides, the toggle button on BossPref.app doesn’t seem to be working in my case. Well, no big deal, i just leave it alone.
Any questions, just email me or leave a comment. Good luck.
Update(Dec.17,2008): image.bin works. Tested on my 2.2 iphone.

iPhone 2.1: First Impression
Saturday, September 13th, 20084. Contacts search goes much much faster.
Well, that’s all that i’ve found about the new iphone 2.1 OS so far. Perhaps later I’ll get more. If so, i’ll update it here.
One more thing, at this moment, there’s no jailbreak solution out for the new OS. That is to say, you do the upgrade, you lose all of those unofficial 3rd party applications installed either by Installer or Cydia. So you decide to update or not.
Update(Sep.17,2008): Significantly better battery life confirmed.
iTunes Store Unblocked
Saturday, August 23rd, 2008After being blocked for about a week since last Monday, iTunes Store has been unblocked and come back to live this morning. Now you can access it by either iTunes on the computer or App Store on the iphone.
Cheers!
I can install those of my favorite free apps now.
Update(Aug,24,2008): Here’s the screenshot of proof at the time of this updating.
weDict Dictionary on iPhone 2.0.1
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008I’ve been successfully added the langdao-chinese-to-english dictionary manually to my iphone 2.0.1. and it works as expected. Here’s the screenshots, fyi.
The how-to? well, reader Daniel has put it in this comment. All same as before, except the target folder where the .dict and .idx files should be copied to, has been changed from ‘/var/root/Library/weDict/‘ to the new ‘/private/var/mobile/Applications/5AD48CB3-xxx/WeDict.app‘.
This post is just a proof based on my own testing.
Of couse, i assume you can use WinSCP without any question. If i’m wrong, you may get some info from that old post. Leave your comment if it’s nor working or anything is wrong.
Update(Aug,23,2008): Confirmed: this trick works on my updated 2.0.2 as well.
Update(Sep,26,2008): Confirmed: Ray is right: ‘it will only works until the phone is turned off. Once the phone is turn off and then back on, WeDict will not run.’
iPhone 2.0.1
Monday, August 11th, 2008Now I’m on the latest iphone 2.0.1 firmware(Thanks goes to Winpwn 2.0.4). And everything works flawlessly. Compared with 2.0, the biggest improvements i’ve found is the app launch speed is much faster. You may get more other 2.0.1 improvements here.
One more advantage of going to 2.0.1 is having both Installer 4.0 beta(youtube video) and Cydia on the phone. I don have any high expectation on it, just can’t wait to try it out myself
Even if not all of the old iphone 1.1.x apps has been ported to 2.0.x, still lots of apps there waiting for you. I myself have’t got enough time to try them yet, you may get it from the screenshot above. For now i installed iCosta PinYin, BossPrefs, Chinese Carrier bundles and two games.
One more thing, with Winpwn 2.0.4, i’ve resized the space for the apps from the default 300M to 700M, which means, i can install the apps as many as I want
Chinese Input Methods For iPhone 2.0
Sunday, August 10th, 2008You’ve got the following options:
1. Apple
No additional installations, just several clicks on the Settings. But it’s very basic, i mean, in both features and Chinese character dictionary. No surprise at all, after you play it around for a while.
Use only when you’ve got no choice
2.iCosta 1.2.3(in Chinese)

My choice now. Very stable, as good as it used to be before 2.0,from 1.0.x to 1.1.4.
Easy installation through Cydia is first to install their source from Sections->Repository(freecoder.org) then install your favorite IME from Sections->Localization.
3.WeFit iPhone 2.0(Chinese)

Still in very early development phase, but there’s already a release in Cydia. I Haven’t tried it yet. But i did use the old WeFit iPhone 1.1.x before when i was in 1.1.x. Works like a charm. If I’m right, WeFit iPhone 1.1.x is the first Chinese IME by which you can input character phase, other than character one by one. I may give the 2.0 version a try later when it’s out of beta.
If you are brave enough and can’t wait for a more mature release, you can get it from Sections->[WeiPhone] after enabling WeiPhone source from Sections->Repository.
4.iAcces(Chinese)

Initiated from the same dev group in HongKong who creates the previouse iphone 1.1.x IME NativeCN, now it has a brand new name and lots of cool features.
Very promising. I’m looking forward to its release. The only problem for now is you have to wait
