WPtouch – The Coolest WP Theme for mobile

Just happened to get this new theme from the admin page by the part of plugins->most popular. After a little bit playground I think it deserves a new post to recommend to my readers.

Official website is here. And the latest version is 1.9.2.2(Thanks to WP for its very charming feature of installing/upgrading the plugin in the admin page directly. Very nice.)

Below is what this site looks like in the iPhone’s safari browser.

cui-wptouchcui-wptouch-2

I don have other mobile devices like gPhone or Blackberry, so don know how it performs in that devices. It does look quite nice at least in the iphone.

Besides, it loads fast and the user experience of the whole ajax-powered interface does make me very satisfied. Not mention its very nice feature of allowing the reader to switch between the regular lookings and wptouch version. Really cool, isn’t it?

I should say, with wptouch, time to say goodbye to my long-used iwphone plugin.

UCWeb 6.7beta Released: Support iPhone 3.x

ucweb67

I’ve been waiting for it for a long time, really. I love it so.The reason? I’ve talked it before, not mention so many new features has been added in this release.

To quote a few, brand new UI design(i think it cooler), full screen browsing, support direct installation from .deb,.pxl,.ipa, support music(.3gp,.mp3) and movie(.mov,.mp4)) download and playback, last session restore…

I myself still haven’t enough time to digg deeper into it yet. To get more, you better try it out by yourself. Just give it some patience ‘coz it’s still in beta and buggy, from from as stable and user-friendly as Safari.

However, it IS worth of a try.

Cydia/Icy source is: http://wap.ucweb.com/iphone/cydia.

Compatible Firmwares: 2.0 | 2.0.1 | 2.0.2 | 2.1 | 2.2 | 2.2.1 | 3.0 | 3.0.1

Here’s the new home and a downloaded mp3 ready to play.

Optimized Google.cn Search for iPhone

Maybe you already know that Google Mobile Team has made lots of improvements on the page of search results for the mobile devices like iPhone(link created by online proxy zend2.com, ‘coz blogspot has been blocked by GFW), here’s what I’ve found on what the details are on Google.cn.

1. Universal search for sure

I’ve checked the search results one by one by taking a comparison with g.cn on my laptop searching for the same keyword.

Yes, they are the same.

2.Mobile formatted

google-mobile-formatted

Absolutely my favorite feature, always. ‘Coz that will take a big cut the traffic and reduce much cost accordingly when I use it on the China Mobile’s network.

Strongly recommend it, esp. when you use iphone a lot to surf the net in the cellular network.

On iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 2

Here’s how i get there, terribly straightforward. btw, i’m already on iPhone OS 3.0 beta 1 before upgrade.

1. Download the unoffical quickpwn here(discussion here) and the iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 on Demonoid(use iphone firmware to search).

2. Launch iTunes(i’m on 8.1), Shift+Restore to choose the firmware(iPhone1,1_3.0_7A259g_Restore.ipsw) to update.

3. After done, start quickpwn.exe to jailbreak and activate. No unlock necessarily ‘coz the restore process won’t touch the baseband.

4. Sync back all of your stuff by iTunes. In my case, I always set it up as a new phone ‘coz doing so makes me feel it’s a like brand new one :-)

Enjoy the beta 2 now.

iPhone OS 3.0 Undocumented Features

Apple said there are more than 100 new features for the non-developer iphone owners like me in the iPhone OS 3.0. Same as usual, Apple doesn’t give us a document about what they are and how to use them.

Until now I myself haven’t see them all. But I do have some findings, just after playing around for a couple of days with 3.0. And I’d like to put all of them here, FYI.

Here they are, grouped by applications.

1.Phone

1.1 Phone->Recents

Much detailed Call History Info, like call number type, call in or out, calling minutes etc.

recent-call-inforecent-call-info2

1.2Phone->Contacts

>>Delete contact info piece by piece(the red button is placed there by ME, ‘coz for some reason screenshot cannot be done at that status)

contacts-delete

Contact Share, Tap Address will launch Google Map to search and My Number.

2.SpringBoard(Home Screen)

Press the Home key will take you to the left one of the current home screen, until you reach the most left Spotlight Search screen. And then press Home will make you switch between the Spotlight Search and the first home screen right after Spotlight.

3.Calculator

Turn the phone into landscape mode will take you to the scientific calculator automatically. Perhaps this it not a new one, i’m not sure here. Correct me if you know it.

4.Settings

Mail: Load Remote Images , Safari : Autofill,Fraud Warning, iPod: Shake to Shuffle.. Well, even though I haven’t figure out how they really works, they are the features that I haven’t seen in the previous firmwares. So just put them here for sharing.

5.Clock

Stopwatch: real time count display for each lap

stopwatch

One more thing, Facebook already starts taking use of the shake API brought by the OS 3.0. Here’s the setting screenshot.

facebook-shake

P.S. It works like a charm.

BTW, if you know more undocumented featurs of iPhone OS 3.0, please leave it in the comments. Thanks.

Update(Mar 31,2009): some more findings

1.Safari -> Autofill

very nice, really.

2.Settings ->General ->Home

More choices for the double tap Home button, like to launch Camera, to Search.

My iPhone OS 3.0 Installation Experience

Not as easy as i expected, actually. But finally, i made it.

There ARE some discussions in the Dev Team community on this topic here, where I learned the confirmed fact that the first generation iphone could be updated to the latest iPhone OS 3.0 safely. In summary, the basic steps are: DFU downgrade to 2.0.2, pwn it(unlock) by QuickPwnRC2, then UPDATE to iPhone OS 3.0. Done.

So this afternoon i decided to give it a try(I know it’s in beta and buggy, but its new features(official version here) are really attractive, esp. just after i watched the presentation).

Some screenshots below, to give you an idea of what the latest iPhone OS 3.0 will look like.

iphone-os-30-homeiphone-os-30-copyiphone-os-30-sms-forwardiphone-os-30-sms-lanscape

Now let’s back to the topic of how I managed to get there.

But before that, let me explain where I am: firmware 2.2.1, iTunes 8.1, and an very old iphone(BL 3.9, 4G capacity).

I first downgraded the phone to 2.0.2 in DFU mode(here’s the youtube how-to video in case you need it). Then I downloaded QuickPwnRC2.zip(download link). Until now, everything is fine. But when I launch QuickPwnRC2.exe to start pwning, the problem came.

I stucked in the ‘select firmware’ screen.  I tried re-downgrade, find another QuickPwnRC2 download link , but no luck.

I then decided to give QuickPwnRC3 a try(‘coz at least someone said it worked too). Of course the pwnage process went successfully as expected. Then I shift+update to iPhone OS 3.0(iPhone1,1_3.0_7A238j_Restore.ipsw, torrent file(3G OS 3.0 included as well) here: http://tinyurl.com/chycn5).

And here came the ‘unexpected surprise'(‘coz most guys said RC2, not RC3,is the real magic): my iPhone, with OS 3.0 installed, kept activated :-) :-)

But I just celebrated too early. ‘Coz when I started to rename the phone(untitled playlist to Cui) and hit enter to confirm, the phone suddenly rebooted. And after it came alive, the screen  became the emgercy-call one, which means I failed: activation is needed :-( :-(

Even though i don have a backup phone, and normally I used my phone most in the Monday, I still wanna give it a second try. By it, i mean, QuickPwnRC3. At that time, i thought perhaps I would make it after the first failed DFU-downgrade-then-upgrade try. You know, I do had similar experience before in the unlocking steps..

So I put the phone into DFU mode again, downgrade to 2.0.2, then make QuickPwnRC3 to unlock the phone(actually the phone has been keeping unlocked all over. Here choose unlock is actually to take use of RC3’s activation actions). Then launch iTunes and shift-update to iPhone OS 3.0.

The iPhone kept activated and unlocked when done, not surprisingly. Then I synced with iTunes after announcing it as a new phone. Sync finished successfully. I then played a little on the new OS. Well, features are there. sweet. Just some functions, sometime, are a little bit slow. Well, beta, understandable, right?

In the end, I thought perhaps I should try a reboot and see if this time the phone would be locked or not. I then pressed the on/off key, slide to power off, waited the spinning icon going off for a while, then power it on, wait until the spring board launched.

Now guess what? No emergency-call screen, just down to the home screen! Yeah! I’m done! Cheers!!  :-)

So, if you wanna do the upgrade yourself, please make sure your phone is the 2G version. and you’re fully prepared.

Good luck.

Mobile Firefox Alpha 2 Released

(from official site)

With this release, i expect mobile firefox would be much closer to the day of firefox running on the iphone, even though there’s already a saying of that would not happen due to the restriction of Apple’s SDK.

But, people like me who would love to make it happen, just make our voice out and loud and then get heard.

Who knows what will happen, eventually.

iPhone 3G Unlocked!

This is done by the well-known DevTeam, AGAIN. See the official news on their blog here. and as said, ‘The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.

So for those iPhone 3G ‘unoffcial’ owners, please keep an close eye on the DevTeam’s blog. And don forget to show your appreciation if possible.

Wiki2Touch On iPhone 2.1

Wiki2Touch(google code page here) has always been one of my favorite apps since day 1 when I get it. The feeling is great, you know, when you have no idea of something, you always can ask Wiki2Touch for the answer. Most of time, you will be satisfied. Besides, at that moment, you don have to be online. Terribly awesome, eh?

If you are a fan of Wiki2Touch and you now have the firmware 2.0 or 2.1, and you haven’t figure out how to get Wiki2Touch working on the iphone, I have a good news for you :-)

I googled a lot and finally find this post. It works.

The how-to is easy. But before that, make sure you already have this:

1. A jailbroke iphone on firmware 2.x(including 2.1) with OpenSSH successfully loaded.

2. The wikipedia data file(.bin) in your preferred language version.

Now download this wikipedia-auf-fw-201 to your computer, unzip it and then copy them to the phone by WinSCP(read my previous post here for more info) or your preferred client.

Then give 0755 permission to the server daemon \private\var\mobile\Media\Wikipedia\daemon\wikisrvd. Run daemon/wikisrvd -v -l zh & via Putty.

Open Safari and go to http://127.0.0.1:8080/index.html. And you are now supposed to see the familar homepage of Wiki2Touch.

Add this link to your bookmark and you are done. Anytime when you wanna find out something, use this bookmark in Safari.

I haven’t uploaded the image.bin to the phone, so not sure if the image functions well or not. Besides, the toggle button on BossPref.app doesn’t seem to be working in my case. Well, no big deal, i just leave it alone.

Any questions, just email me or leave a comment. Good luck.

Update(Dec.17,2008): image.bin works. Tested on my 2.2 iphone.

Chinese Input Methods For iPhone 2.0

You’ve got the following options:

1. Apple

No additional installations, just several clicks on the Settings. But it’s very basic, i mean, in both features and Chinese character dictionary. No surprise at all, after you play it around for a while.

Use only when you’ve got no choice :-)

2.iCosta 1.2.3(in Chinese)

My choice now. Very stable, as good as it used to be before 2.0,from 1.0.x to 1.1.4.

Easy installation through Cydia is first to install their source from Sections->Repository(freecoder.org) then install your favorite IME from Sections->Localization.

3.WeFit iPhone 2.0(Chinese)

Still in very early development phase, but there’s already a release in Cydia. I Haven’t tried it yet. But i did use the old WeFit iPhone 1.1.x before when i was in 1.1.x. Works like a charm. If I’m right, WeFit iPhone 1.1.x is the first Chinese IME by which you can input character phase, other than character one by one. I may give the 2.0 version a try later when it’s out of beta.

If you are brave enough and can’t wait for a more mature release, you can get it from Sections->[WeiPhone] after enabling WeiPhone source from Sections->Repository.

4.iAcces(Chinese)

Initiated from the same dev group in HongKong who creates the previouse iphone 1.1.x IME NativeCN, now it has a brand new name and lots of cool features.

Very promising. I’m looking forward to its release. The only problem for now is you have to wait :-(
